An interesting development in the additive manufacturing (AM) industry is the support it provides to the maker movement, a collection of activities in the large and growing do-it-yourself (DIY) community

An interesting development in the additive manufacturing (AM) industry is the support it provides to the maker movement, a collection of activities in the large and growing do-it-yourself (DIY) community. In the digital age of 3D modeling and 3D printing, DIY has taken on a new meaning. Never before have “makers” and DIYers received so much attention. A catalyst for the maker movement has been the open-source systems and kits that range in price from about $750 to $4,000. These machines do not produce parts at industry standard levels of quality, but they provide access to an entirely new set of customers.

The open-source RepRap project developed quickly, and became surprisingly popular. It was the genesis of Bits From Bytes (UK) in 2008 and MakerBot in 2009. These 3D printers are variations of RepRap. The UP! machine from Delta Micro Factory Corp. (Beijing, China) was likely inspired by the RepRap work as well. Fab@Home is another open-source development, but it employs a syringe instead of a filament on a spool. Together, more than 10,000 assembled machines and kits are estimated to have been placed by these five developments. This is unprecedented, and to some, nothing short of astounding.

Other efforts have contributed to the growth of the DIY maker movement. Shapeways, a company launched by the Dutch electronics giant Philips and now headquartered in New York, offers an online marketplace for products made by additive manufacturing. The i.materialise division of Materialise (Leuven, Belgium) is attempting to bring AM and 3D printing within everyone’s reach by supplying the tools and manufacturing for people with ideas. A third example is Ponoko (Wellington, New Zealand), a company that offers a “personal factory” for anyone wanting to create an object or product from an idea.

Note: The previous information was taken from Wohlers Report 2011, a 270-page global study focusing on the advances in additive manufacturing and 3D printing worldwide. A detailed overview of the report, as well as additional information on the market and industry, are available at http://wohlersassociates.com.
Wohlers Talk: Carl Bass and IDEAS

I was presented with the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with Carl Bass, CEO of Autodesk. I had never met him, so I jumped at the chance. I found that he is not the typical chief executive of a $2 billion company. He was down to earth, very focused on our conversation, and did not seem rushed, even though an event with special international guests was about to begin.

Unlike most executives, Carl gets his hands dirty, literally. He likes to create and build stuff, such as baseball bats for a Little League team that he has coached. He also uses design software and produces parts with 3D printing. His company owns and operates several 3D printers and he and his employees are excited about how the technology could develop in the future.

I was very lucky to receive an invitation to attend a special Carl Bass event at the beautiful Autodesk Gallery facility in downtown San Francisco. Initially, I had mixed feelings about it, only because it partially conflicted with the successful RAPID 2011 Conference & Exposition held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It turned out that I made the right decision to accept the invitation. Before going to Autodesk, I attended the Maker Faire in San Mateo, along with about 95,000 others. This, in itself, was an intriguing and worthwhile experience. I also caught an interesting presentation by Carl Bass at the Maker Faire.

The Autodesk program was a part of its relatively new IDEAS: The Innovation + Design Series—a “think tank” format made up of hand-picked individuals from around the world. The event was titled Reimaging Manufacturing: The Technologies Driving the New Industrial Revolution. It focused largely on the making of objects and products with 3D printing and how this technology might change the face of manufacturing in the future. Among the relatively small group in attendance were Chris Anderson of Wired magazine, Neil Gershenfield of MIT, Mitch Free of MFG.com, and Ping Fu of Geomagic.

The discussions were stimulating and the thinking associated with 3D printing and additive manufacturing was much more advanced than I had anticipated. Many of these people are not “contaminated” by the additive manufacturing problems and limitations of the past. Those in attendance, including several Autodesk executives and Carl Bass himself, have strong and interesting views of where these tools might go in the future and how they could shape entirely new markets, opportunities, and business models. I felt very lucky to have been a part of it, but sincerely wish I could have stayed for the entire event.

Especialmente interesante la evolución del mercado de proveedores de servicios RM.

Industry Briefing from Wohlers Associates

Service Providers

Service providers, also referred to as service bureaus, offer part building services to design and manufacturing organizations as an outsourced service. These services typically include parts made by additive manufacturing as well as secondary services such as design, CAD, reverse engineering, cast urethane parts, custom painting, CNC, metal castings, and injection molding.

For many years, Wohlers Associates has sought input from service providers to help determine the state of the industry. This year, 70 companies in 19 countries participated in a formal survey. Thirty-seven are from the U.S., six from Germany, four from India, three from Belgium and the UK, two each from Australia, Italy, and Turkey, and one each from Brazil, Canada, China, Greece, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and Thailand.

Most of the service providers offer services other than additive manufacturing. The most popular are design and CAD services, which are offered by 75% of those surveyed. Urethane casting, sometimes referred to as vacuum casting, is the second most popular and offered by 68.8% of the respondents. Engineering services, at 59.4%, is third. Other popular services include injection mold tooling (45.3%), 3D scanning/reverse engineering (43.8%), and injection molding (40.6%). Only 26.6% of the respondents offer metal casting.

The chart at http://wohlersassociates.com/sp.htm shows the percentage of survey respondents that added additive manufacturing systems to their operations. Nearly 40% added new machines in 2010, compared to less than 22% the year before. In 2009, companies showed that they neither had the cash to invest in additional systems nor the confidence that business would be there if they did. Several companies sold off unused capacity to lower overhead and provide additional working capital. With an improving economy and increasing product development and manufacturing, the situation changed in 2010.

Note: The previous information was taken from Wohlers Report 2011, a 270-page global study focusing on the advances in additive manufacturing and 3D printing worldwide. A detailed overview of the report, as well as additional information on the market and industry, are available at http://wohlersassociates.com.
Wohlers Talk: Universities Create Wealth

Someone once said that our university system is the envy of the world. I don’t know whether this is true, but I do know that we have many special institutions of higher education within our borders. One is Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an organization that has produced more than I would have ever thought.

MIT graduates have founded 25,800 companies, according to the January 22, 2011 issue of The Economist. These companies employ 3.3 million people and generate annual sales of $3 trillion, according to the article. This is more than three times the gross domestic product (GDP) of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, and many other countries.

Another article in the same issue of The Economist stated that 41% of millionaires worldwide live in the U.S. This is an extraordinary percentage when considering the world population. The article went on to say that the world’s most wealthy are entrepreneurs that started a business.

Our university system has undoubtedly contributed greatly to entrepreneurism, which has led to personal and national wealth. If one university can do what it has done—albeit MIT—imagine what the more than 4,800 colleges and universities spread across the U.S. are achieving. Regardless of what you might hear from others, supporting higher education is a wise investment..

TCT Live 2011 – Call For Papers

Rapid News Communications Group is delighted to announce a significant development for TCT Live in 2011. Having reached capacity at the previous venue TCT Live will relocate to the NEC, Birmingham enabling continued growth and the ability to offer an enhanced visitor and exhibitor experience.

The need to do this comes at an exciting time, as 2011 will see Rapid News also take the reins of Interplas for the first time. The co-location of TCT Live and Interplas along with MM Live UK, MEMS Live, NANO Live, the PPMA Show and Sensing Technology will contribute to the largest gathering of engineering and manufacturing technology in the UK in 2011 with a projected attendance of over 10,000 visitors.

In order to maintain the world class nature of this event Rapid News Communications Group is now calling for outstanding abstract submissions for the following sessions.

TCT Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Conference

The TCT conference, now approaching its 16th edition, is characterised by high quality presentations from leading users of the technologies and industry commentators. For 2011 the conference will continue to explore the impact and applications of both AM and 3DP. Presentations should address the design issues, the business benefits in terms of time-to-market, financial objectives, material issues and/or part performance.

All submissions must be non-promotional in content and presented by companies that are utilising and/or researching the technologies for an industrial application. NOTE: No vendor papers will be accepted from companies that sell machines, materials or associated services for this section of the programme.

Additive Manufacturing Tech Briefings

Open to all major AM and 3DP machine manufacturers. Vendors are invited to unveil their latest and future developments in short, sharp fifteen-minute presentations, giving the buyer an instant snapshot of what is hot and imminent from each of the major players.

In addition papers are also being sought for the following sessions, there are no restrictions on vendor participation, but all abstracts must demonstrate an educational nature. Sales presentations will not be accepted.

Software in Product Development & Manufacturing

Product Development & Manufacturing Technology for the Dental Industry

Product Development & Manufacturing Technology for the Jewellery Industry

Inspection/Metrology in Product Development & Manufacturing

Interested parties are initially requested to submit an abstract of 250 words of their proposed paper on or before February 11th 2011. This should include the working title, all authors/contributors and their affiliations. All submissions will be reviewed to ensure that they meet the necessary and exacting requirements of TCT.

TCT Live will be held at the NEC Birmingham, 27–29 September 2011, and anyone submitting a presentation must be available to present on any of these three days. Please submit abstracts to Emma Smith via email: emma@rapidnews.com.

Tel: +44 (0) 1829 770037, Email: events@rapidnews.com, Web: http://www.tctshow.com/ For further information please call Emma Smith.
